    Welcome to the vibrant recap of the 5th Annual Virtual Productions Gathering, held on April 9–10, 2025 in Breda (NL) at the Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas).

    VP Gathering 25 - Georgina Cammalleri - Do Pixels Dream of Real Sheep?

    Breda University of Applied Sciences hosted the 2025 edition of the Virtual Productions Gathering.

    Meet the Speaker: Georgina Cammalleri - Director - Freelance

    Georgina Cammalleri is a BAFTA-winning and Sports Emmy-nominated filmmaker known for blending storytelling with technology.
    Her directorial work includes Netflix’s Horse Hitman and Right to Fight. Prior to directing, she produced acclaimed documentaries such as the BAFTA-winning Gun No. 6 and Taken: Hunting the sex traffickers.

    Authenticity is everything in documentaries—so why consider virtual production? This talk explores its current uses, examines what’s worked and what hasn’t, and imagines future possibilities.

    VP Gathering 25 - Anna Doublet & Simon von der Au - The challenge of research, creative work on LED

    Breda University of Applied Sciences hosted the 2025 edition of the Virtual Productions Gathering.

    Anna Doublet - European Marketing Solution Specialist BtoB - Sony Professional Solution Europe

    Anna is passionate about new technology, beautiful images with inspiring stories. Customer satisfaction is key of her activity. Creative ideas, smart realization and measurable results are the directions of her professional journey.

    Simon von der Au - Project Leader - CreatiF Center

    Simon von der Au studied media informatics at the LMU Munich and researched augmented reality in the film and television context. Since 2023 he has headed the CreatiF Centre, the innovations Hub of the University for Television and Film Munich.

    Presentation abstract:

    The CreatiF Center, the innovation hub of the University of Television and Film Munich, has procured an LED wall for the university as part of its research project. In this presentation, we report on how we were able to implement the requirements of the various stakeholders and ultimately opted for the LED wall from Sony. One thing is clear: it is not easy to reconcile research, teaching and the highest creative demands.

    VP Gathering 25 - Erik Wolford - Shooting Europa, an Exploration Into the Latest ICVFX Techniques

    Breda University of Applied Sciences hosted the 2025 edition of the Virtual Productions Gathering.

    Meet the Speaker: Erik "Wolfie" Wolford - Cinematographer, Producer - Wolf Team Productions

    Cinematographer Erik “Wolfie” Wolford specializes in features, commercials and documentaries.
    Wolfie came up through the lighting department in the 90’s lighting features, music videos and commercials with legendary directors Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Mc. G and Francis Lawrence.
    Soon Wolfie was joining lighting crews on features including Iron Man 3, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Interstellar.
    He is an expert in filming LED volumes, certified by Epic games in Unreal Engine, and ICVFX.

    VP Gathering 25 - Rhys Murphy - The Perception of Virtual Production

    Meet the Speaker: Rhys Murphy - VP Specialist - Freelancer

    Rhys is an accomplished 3D artist, volume operator, and virtual production technician with expertise in a wide array of systems, including greenscreen live composites and LED volumes.
    With a BA (Hons) in “Computer Arts” and two Master’s degrees in “3D Design” and “Virtual Production”, Rhys brings both technical expertise and creative insight to modern production workflows.

    VP Gathering 25 - Dr Ian Biscoe - Filming in the "Metaverse": new tools for distributed VP

    Breda University of Applied Sciences hosted the 2025 edition of the Virtual Productions Gathering.

    Meet the Speaker: Dr. Ian Biscoe - Professor - Transdisciplinary Design Networks at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE)

    Ian is a serial technology entrepreneur with start-up experience in Europe and the USA, Ian’s activities have crossed aerospace, process control, entertainment and architecture.
    He is currently Professor Transdisciplinary Design Networks at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) where his Trans Realities Lab (TRL) is investigating applications of real-time collaborative networked XR in education, design, production and research.
    His latest artistic projects explore the use of VP/XR mediated environments within live performance.

    Presentation abstract:

    The use of Virtual Production in film and live broadcast (combining real-time digital elements with physical production, as popularly employed in the creation of series like the Mandalorian, and films such as The Batman) is typically still bound to one physical production location.
    DVP opens the possibilities of multi-site real-time coproduction, one where actors, cinematographers, directors, artists, and production staff can be virtually collocated across widely distributed geographies, working together as if physically collocated.

    Meet the Speaker: Rob Chandler - VP Supervisor - Morden Wolf, Starting Pixel

    Rob Chandler, a former Global Director of Events at Salesforce, pivoted to virtual production during the pandemic, founding Starting Pixel—a global community of over 1,000 members across 70+ countries. Starting Pixel is a dynamic platform supporting virtual production innovation, from in-camera VFX to AI in digital environments, and serves as a vital resource for industry leaders and newcomers alike.

    After a successful career in tech marketing with industry giants like Microsoft, and Salesforce, Rob made a bold pivot into the world of VP – without any prior experience.
    He didn’t know how to turn on a camera, let alone understand terms like UE, pixel pitch, or genlock.
    In this session, Rob shares his journey from complete beginner to leading a global community of VP professionals, offering insights into navigating new industries, embracing emerging technologies, and building meaningful connections along the way.

    Meet the Speakers:

    Volker Helzle - Head of R&D - Animationsinstitut of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg

    Volker Helzle is in charge of R&D at Animationsinstitut of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
    He graduated from Stuttgart Media University, later worked in the USA at Eyematic Interfaces before joining the Filmakademia to establish the Technical Directing course there.
    Volker is also one of the FMX program consultants.

    Simon Spielmann - Principal R&D engineer - Animationsinstitut of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg

    Simon Spielmann is part of the R&D Department at the Animationsinstitut with focus on software development, real-time graphics and XR.
    He graduated from Bauhaus University Weimar as Media Scientist, later worked as a software developer before joining the Animationinstitut as a Principal Engineer.
    He is also responsible for the scientific counseling and supervision of the Technical Director Course at the Filmakademie.

    Presentation abstract:

    This talk will introduce the applied research approach at Filmakademie with regard to real-time technologies, Virtual Production and XR.
    Numerous EU- and regionally-funded projects have supported the development of an open-source XR ecosystem, which includes TRACER as foundation and VPET, AnimHost and DataHub as example implementations.
    We will also take a closer look at the sustainability potential of these technologies and elaborate on the postgraduate Technical Directing course at Animationsinstitut.

    Justine Coulmy is a Director of Photography specializing in virtual production. A graduate of ENS Louis-Lumière, she explores the interaction between real and virtual environments, focusing on 3D lighting, rendering, and photorealism. Alongside her cinematographic work in fiction, documentaries, and music videos, she leads the Virtual Production Master’s Program at École Méliès.

    This presentation explores the development of a training program designed to prepare future supervisors in virtual production.     How can writing for a small LED volume differ from typical screenwriting? In this talk, Mata explains strategies they use to create micro-scripts (1-2 pages) containing conflict and suspense that give production teams the freedom to learn and experiment with VP technologies.

    He’s working on connecting the different media industries and has explored everything from Live Events to Broadcast shows in addition to feature films and commercials.

    VP Gathering 25 - Joan Da Silva - Unreal Engine in Classrooms Way Beyond Games

    Breda University of Applied Sciences hosted the 2025 edition of the Virtual Productions Gathering.

    Meet the Speaker: Joan Da Silva - UE Post-Secondary Director - Epic Games

    Joan is a pioneer in the creative industries. He founded Artepict in 1997, an animation and online gaming studio, before working as a Producer at Ubisoft and Creative Director at Rovio (Angry Birds). Transitioning to education, he led renowned French Digital Arts schools, LISAA and ARTFX. Now, as Post Secondary Education Director at Epic Games, he helps creative industries adopt Real-Time Technologies.
