Houdini 21 is here!
Every new version of Houdini is never just an update: it’s a clear signal of where the 3D and visual effects industry is heading.
With Houdini 21, SideFX chooses the path of maturity: instead of introducing sudden revolutions, it consolidates existing frameworks and raises them to a level of solidity that truly makes a difference in production.
KineFX: faster and more structured animation
With the new Autorig Builder, Motion Mixer, and Animation Catalog, rigging and animation workflows become faster and more consistent.
This procedural approach not only saves time but also makes it easier to manage the complexity of large-scale projects.
CFX and VFX: increasingly realistic simulations
The new Otis solver, dedicated to muscles and organic tissues, brings unprecedented realism, leveraging GPU acceleration for high performance.
Innovative tools are also arriving, such as Machine Learning–based Pyro Upres, which enhances the quality of fire and smoke starting from lightweight simulations, and the Sparse GPU Pyro Solver for much faster results.
On top of that, Houdini introduces Reaction Diffusion effects and new tools for vehicle destruction, further expanding creative possibilities.
Solaris and Karma: smoother production
In rendering and scene management, Houdini 21 focuses on stability. With Shot Builder, Live Rendering, and support for Hydra 2, Solaris becomes even more reliable for complex pipelines.
Karma XPU gains key features such as Gaussian Splats and support for shader mixing, ensuring greater flexibility and speed.
Terrains and environments: realism in less time
New terrain erosion tools, based on GPU-accelerated hydraulic and thermal solvers, make the creation of complex, realistic worlds faster and more accurate.
In summary
Houdini 21 is the release of solid foundations.
It’s designed to give artists more stable, faster, and more productive tools, while responding to the real needs of the industry.
A fundamental step forward for anyone working in high-end animation, VFX, and procedural 3D.
