School - The moon's cycle and the earth’s tides

Course created by Sebastiano Giornelli, an intern at Biunivoca, under the supervision of Daniele Barone.

The course The Moon’s Cycle and the Earth’s Tides offers a hands-on, interactive introduction to using Unreal Engine for creating scientific simulations and cinematics.
Through five progressive lessons, students will explore the relationship between the Moon and the tides, learning advanced techniques in visual effects and animations.
This course is designed to provide technical skills that are useful in both educational and professional contexts, combining physics, science, astronomy, and 3D development.

Instruction is structured around a practical approach: starting with understanding the basics of Unreal Engine’s Niagara system and progressing to the creation of complete cinematics using the Level Sequencer and Post Process Volume.

BY FOLLOWING THIS COURSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Navigate the Unreal Engine interface and use the Niagara system for visual simulations.

  • Correctly activate and configure the necessary plugins and Niagara assets.

  • Create tidal simulations using realistic fluid effects.

  • Understand how materials work in Unreal Engine (Master Material vs. Material Instance).

  • Insert and manage light sources, such as the Directional Light and BP_Sky Sphere.

  • Build cinematics with the Level Sequencer, using keyframes and interpolations.

ARE THERE ANY REQUIREMENTS OR PREREQUISITES FOR THE COURSE?

No previous experience with Unreal Engine required, provided the lessons are followed in sequence.
Basic knowledge of computer graphics and physics concepts (optional).

TO WHOM THIS COURSE IS ADDRESSED:

  • High school students interested in astronomy, science, technology, and 3D development.

  • Aspiring visual effects developers looking to learn the basics of Unreal Engine’s Niagara system.

  • Teachers and educators who want to integrate interactive tools and scientific simulations into their courses.
