Workshop: Video Game Lab

Biunivoca, in collaboration with theAcademy of Fine Arts of Rome held a workshop with its teachers for the 50 students of the Academy.

Training dedicated to the development of Gaming-oriented applications.

During the three-day workshop, the students had the opportunity to work with 3D modeling software such as Blender and with industry-standard game engines such as Unreal Engine.
The course covered the entire development process: from scene construction, to programming via visual scripting with Blueprint, up to tackling the study and integration of audio through MetaSounds, directly within Unreal Engine.

The workshop was led by three different teachers who took turns during the 3 days of training:

Kevin Piccione managed the block out, level design and set dressing part, Jacopo de Rosa programming in blueprint illustrating the base classes, an interaction system, collisions and communication between scripts.
Carlo Tuzza introduced Nuendo, exploring the DAW interface and its main sections to understand the basic workflow. He then focused on cleaning up the sounds, working on editing the audio files to remove unwanted noise.
He then introduced some sound design techniques, including Vertical Layering, useful for creating sounds composed of multiple layers that can be dynamically combined. How to correctly export audio files was described, applying naming conventions to keep the project tidy and facilitate implementation and preparation for use in a game engine.
After preparing the files, a sound environment (Roomtone) was created and we moved on to its implementation in Unreal Engine. He briefly introduced how MetaSounds work.
Finally, some previously created Blueprints were used to manage some interactable objects and a Trigger Box to automatically start the sound environment when the character enters the room.
