Rigging Workshop in Unreal Engine 5.6!
Epic Games has recently made the
Workshop: Rigging in Unreal Engine 5.6 available for free through the Epic Developer Community, an opportunity for those who want to master rigging techniques directly inside Unreal Engine without relying on external tools.
Workshop Objective
Originally designed for professional animation technicians, the workshop aims to provide practical, production-ready skills for building animatable and modular rigs directly in Unreal Engine 5.6, leveraging the Control Rig system.
This enables participants to tackle real production workflows, moving beyond theory toward a hands-on, applicable learning experience.
What You Will Learn
The course is structured to guide users through multiple stages of rigging, progressing from foundational concepts to advanced techniques:
Unreal Engine 5.6 fundamentals: an introduction to the interface and animation tools.
Control Rig: building and using in-engine rigs to manipulate characters and mechanical assets.
Skeletal Editing: modifying skeletal structures to better suit animation needs.
FK/IK and splines: implementing advanced cinematic controls for limbs and joint chains.
Deformers and blend shapes: managing advanced deformations and morph targets for more expressive animation.
Control Rig Physics: using built-in physics to add realistic dynamics to animations.
Automation tools and Python: an introduction to automation techniques for real-world production pipelines.
These skills offer a balanced mix of technical rigging, animation setup, and advanced tools designed for modern workflows.
A Reference Project: A-COM Animation Sample
To support learning, Epic selected the A-COM Animation Sample, created by Agora Studio, as the workshop’s reference project.
This is a complete example of a 3D animation pipeline inside Unreal Engine, including rigging, keyframe animation, lighting, visual effects, and rendering. Through this project, learners can see the techniques in action and apply them to real-world scenarios.
Who This Workshop Is For
While useful for a broad audience, the workshop is particularly well suited for intermediate to advanced riggers and technical artists who want to migrate or extend their workflow into Unreal Engine, taking advantage of a real-time rigging system instead of traditional DCC tools (such as Maya or Blender).
Available Materials
On the Epic Developer Community portal you will find instructional videos, presentation slides, and downloadable assets. These resources allow you not only to follow the lessons, but also to experiment directly with the project files and reinforce the techniques presented.
IMPORTANT: The course will only be available until January 16th, 2026.
