Math Comes Into Play!
In the Italian educational landscape, there’s a game-based project that’s transforming the way Mathematics is taught and experienced in the classroom.
It's called Superflat Math, and it's much more than just a video game: it's an innovative, creative, and inclusive educational experience based on game-based learning and designed to support teachers and students from second grade through high school.
The project was born from a spin-off of the University of L’Aquila and has already involved nearly a hundred Italian schools through teacher training courses that introduce the use of this powerful educational tool.
Through engaging challenges in a sandbox environment, students can tackle curricular topics such as equations, multiplication tables, fractions, prime numbers, equalities, and much more.
Teachers receive data on common errors and can choose which activities to assign to students in order to support differentiated learning.
Metacognition, inclusion, active engagement: these are not just slogans, but educational principles brought to life through the lab-based activities of Matematica Superpiatta, the result of multiple university-led experiments.
The activity also continues outside the game, through structured educational phases linked to the gaming experience, featuring moments of individual reflection, peer discussion, and concluding with a collective class debate.
The offering for schools includes teacher training, student training, and software licenses, all of which can be funded through various initiatives by the Italian Ministry of Education, such as the Piano Estate and Agenda Nord programs.
If you’re a curious teacher, an innovation-driven school leader, or simply an education enthusiast who believes in the power of play, this project offers you the chance to discover how technology can turn Mathematics into a space of freedom and creativity.
