Godot presents the new official Asset Store: the marketplace will enter Godot 4.7
Godot Engine continues to grow and announces one of the most important innovations in recent years for its ecosystem: the new official Asset Store.
The platform is already available in Beta and will be fully integrated into Godot 4.7, gradually replacing the historic Asset Library.
The Foundation's goal is to offer developers a modern, centralized store that is more competitive than the solutions currently available in the community.
Over the years, in fact, Godot has often suffered in comparison with more mature marketplaces such as those of Unity and Unreal Engine, especially with regards to commercial tools, plugins and monetization systems.
New Asset Store Features
The new store introduces several long-requested community features, designed for both users and content creators.
Among the main new features are:
user reviews and ratings;
publisher analytics;
support for multiple download versions for each asset;
complete changelogs;
custom tagging system;
integration with Godot's shared account system.
According to the Foundation, many more features will arrive in the coming months, including the ability to buy and sell assets directly on the platform.
This will transform the store into a truly official marketplace dedicated to plugins, shaders, tools, templates, graphic assets, and development resources.
Gradual farewell to the old Asset Library
The historic Asset Library will not be closed immediately, but will be officially considered deprecated and will be transformed into a read-only repository.
The decision was also made for technical and organizational reasons.
Among the main issues highlighted by the team are:
the use of a separate account system from other Godot services;
infrastructures that are difficult to update;
compatibility limits with new engine versions;
confusion generated by unofficial external stores.
The Godot Foundation also explained that it avoided an automatic migration of existing assets to avoid problems related to permissions, accounts, and no longer supported content.
An important step for the Godot ecosystem
With this update, Godot aims to further strengthen its ecosystem and make the engine increasingly competitive in the video game development landscape.
In addition to support for commercial assets, the new store will also be used by the Foundation to distribute official plugins and extensions that are not part of the core engine.
The arrival of the marketplace therefore represents an important strategic change for the future of Godot, especially at a time when the engine continues to grow rapidly in popularity among indie developers and independent studios.
