Composition Maker: the free tool that simplifies the creation of environments in Unreal Engine 5
Creating richly detailed environments is one of the most challenging aspects of developing video games and cinematic scenes.
Filling a room with objects, placing decorative elements, stacking boxes or tools and obtaining a natural result can require many hours of manual work.
To speed up this process, Composition Makerwas born, a free tool developed by Andrew Averkin that automates the creation of prop compositions within Unreal Engine 5, allowing environment artists to focus more on art direction rather than repetitive operations.
What is Composition Maker?
Composition Maker is a Python script designed for the Unreal Engine Editor that automatically generates object compositions following customizable rules.
Unlike a simple randomization system, the tool uses the native Unreal Engine Tag system, allowing you to define the behavior of each asset and create believable compositions in seconds.
The goal is not to replace the artist's work, but to speed up the blocking phase and quickly obtain a solid base to refine later. #@
Main features
Composition Maker provides numerous functions designed to simplify the dressing of environments:
Rules-based generation via Unreal Engine Tags.
Intelligent positioning of objects on floors, surfaces or in stacked configurations.
Random rotation to avoid overly artificial compositions.
Automatic duplication with control of the maximum number of copies.
Stacking with height configurable via the MaxStackparameter.
Integration with the physics simulation, useful for obtaining even more natural results.
Automatic organization of the Outliner, keeping the scene tidy and easily manageable.
Compatibility
The tool was developed and tested with Unreal Engine 5.7, but being based on the Python Editor Script Plugin it should also work with several previous versions of Unreal Engine 5.
The author invites users to report any incompatibilities encountered.
It is important to know that the props shown in the promotional images are not included in the download: you will have to use your own assets to create the compositions.
License
Composition Maker is distributed free of charge and can be used in both personal and commercial projects.
You can modify it and adapt it to your workflow, but you are not allowed to:
redistribute the tool;
upload it to other sites;
resell it.
To share it, it is always recommended to link to the official ArtStation page, so as to guarantee access to the most updated version.
Why try it?
Those who create environments know how much time is spent in the environment dressing phase. Composition Maker drastically reduces repetitive work, allowing you to obtain already believable scenes in just a few moments.
It is a particularly interesting tool for:
Environment Artist
Level Designer
Technical Artist
Cinematic Artists
Unreal Engine Developers
Indie teams looking to speed up production
The author developed this tool based on his own workflow needs, using it also during the creation of the cinematic environment The Old Workshop, available as a breakdown on the project page.
How to download it
Composition Maker is available for free on ArtStation as a ZIP archive of about 7.6 MB, containing everything you need to get started.
Conclusions
Composition Maker is one of those tools that, despite being simple, can improve the workflow of those who work daily in Unreal Engine. By automating the placement and organization of props, it allows you to dedicate more time to artistic choices and less to repetitive tasks.
If you create environments for video games, VR experiences, cinematics, or architectural visualizations, it's definitely a tool worth trying.
