AVASCOT Groom Shader: Advanced grooming control and natural variation in UE5
In the real-time rendering of hair and fur, one of the most complex aspects to reproduce is the natural irregularity of color distribution.
In nature, transitions do not occur through uniform gradients: each fiber maintains its own identity, generating an organic mixture in the boundaries between different patterns.
It is precisely on this principle that the Probability Mask in Unreal Engine 5 is based, one of the distinctive features of the AVASCOT Groom Shader.
A probabilistic approach to color distribution
In Unreal Engine AVASCOT introduces a system that uses a single grayscale texture to drive color distribution probabilistically.
The principle is simple but powerful:
Lighter values increase the probability that a new color variation will be assigned to individual fibers.
Darker values keep the fibers belonging to the base area.
The result is not a linear blend, but a stochastic distribution of fibers that credibly simulates the natural behavior of fur or hair.
This allows for visually richer and less artificial transitions than standard blending methods.
Probability Mask vs. Traditional Blending
Unlike a classic lerp between two colors, the probabilistic system does not generate a continuous gradient, but a controlled co-presence of fibers belonging to two different areas.
In production, this means greater realism and better integration between complex patterns, such as spots, tonal variations, or areas of secondary color.
A control table also allows you to precisely evaluate how each gray value affects the assignment probability, offering an extremely advanced level of art direction.
AVASCOT Groom Shader: Advanced control for strand-based grooming
The AVASCOT Groom Shader is a hair and fur shader designed specifically for strand-based workflows in Unreal Engine.
It does not support hair card-based systems, but focuses exclusively on strand-a-grooming, ensuring quality and flexibility for real-time characters, cinematics, and interactive projects.
Key features include:
Support for up to 5 distinct groom areas
Blend system with standard or probabilistic distribution modes
Advanced per-fiber variation control
Detailed root and tip management with variable length and contrast
Dedicated section for localized color masks
The package also includes a comprehensive shader parameter tutorial, a walkthrough on a real production asset, a demo scene, and a curated set of variables used in professional pipelines.
