Unreal Engine 5.8 is out: all the main news and insights
Epic Games officially announced the release of Unreal Engine 5.8 during the State of Unreal 2026 at Unreal Fest Chicago.
This is almost certainly the last major release planned for the Unreal Engine 5 series before moving to UE6.
Unreal Engine 5.8 Highlights
Rendering and Lighting
MegaLights Production-Ready: The advanced lighting system moves out of experimental status.
Delivers less noise, higher visual fidelity, and optimized performance for next-gen consoles and handhelds.Lumen Lite (Beta): New “medium quality” mode based on Irradiance Fields with Probe Occlusion.
It's about twice as fast as Lumen's high quality, ideal for maintaining 60 fps on limited hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2, while maintaining quality dynamic lighting.Support for X-Rite AXF materials directly in Substrate.
Experimental Fog Screen Space Scattering (FSSS) for more realistic volumetric effects (fog, smoke, dust).
Substrate NPR Shading (Experimental Toon Shading) for stylized styles integrated with Lumen.
Worldbuilding and Procedural Tools
Mesh Terrain (Experimental): the big star of the release. A new terrain system based on 3D meshes instead of traditional heightmaps.
Supports overhangs, cliffs, caves, native water integration and Nanite. Works in perfect synergy with PCG.Improved PCG: now allows direct manual edits on the generated content without breaking procedural logic.
Enhanced Procedural Vegetation Editor (PVE) : creation of biologically plausible and Nanite-ready vegetation directly in the Editor, with import from external tools.
Characters, Animation and MetaHuman
MetaHuman Crowd plugin: to populate worlds with tens or thousands of MetaHumans in real time.
Conversion of any human mesh to MetaHuman (head + body simultaneously).
Massive improvements to face rigging and morph targets: direct sculpting in the Editor, lattice deformer, mirroring, split morph, etc.
Modular Control Rig more stable, experimental Direct Mesh Controls (DMC) and Control Rig Physics/Dynamics (particle-based) for hair, clothes and accessories.
Other major new features
New gizmo system, UI reorganization and Project Settings in the Editor.
Experimental plugin MCP (Model Context Protocol) to integrate AI (e.g. Claude) directly into the Editor.
Support Steam Frame (Valve VR headset).
Improvements to Chaos Physics, Virtual Production, Dataflow, Iris and Movie Render Graph (many systems now Production-Ready).
You can download it now from the Epic Games Launcher or the Developer Portal.
